Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon
In collaboration with the Center for Digital and Public Humanities and the Kansas City Monuments Coalition, Digital Scholarship Services is hosting a Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon during Women’s History Month to celebrate the lives of notable Kansas City women. This Edit-A-Thon will make stories of notable Kansas City women accessible to a global audience.
Wikipedia is a free, open source online encyclopedia that is freely editable by anyone. There is a gender gap on Wikipedia; as of June 2024, English Wikipedia only contains about 400,000 biographic entries about women and roughly four times that amount on men (Wikipedia). Millions of people use Wikipedia as a reliable source of information and this event seeks to make this important resource more equitable, and more representative of the contributions of Kansas City women.
Editing experience is not necessary; training will be provided and editors will be on hand to assist. A Wikipedia Editing Workshop will be held one week prior on March 10th. A recording will be available for new editors unable to attend the workshop.
Pizza will be provided for editors at 12pm. Stay for part of the edit-a-thon, or the entire event! Laptops and a Wikipedia account are required.
Sign up for a Wikipedia account prior to the event. Wikipedia restricts registration to six accounts per day on a single IP address, so you may want to attempt off campus.
